Speech changes are another common warning sign. An elderly person may suddenly slur words, speak strangely, repeat confusing phrases, or struggle to find simple words. They may also have trouble understanding what others are saying.
This can be mistaken for ordinary confusion or memory problems, especially in someone who already has mild cognitive changes. But sudden speech difficulty is not something to dismiss.
The CDC lists sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech as a stroke symptom. If speech suddenly changes, call emergency services right away.
