A Protruding Lower Belly and a Stiff Lower Back: What the Psoas Muscle May Have to Do With It

A lower belly that seems to push forward and a stiff lower back may look like two separate problems. One feels visual. The other feels physical. But in some people, both can be connected to posture, hip mobility, core weakness, and a deep muscle called the psoas.

The psoas is one of the main hip flexor muscles. It sits deep inside the body, running from the lower spine through the pelvis toward the upper thigh. Because of where it attaches, it can influence the lower back, hips, pelvis, walking pattern, and posture.
