One of the most common nighttime warning signs is waking up again and again to use the bathroom. When blood sugar is high, the kidneys try to remove extra glucose from the blood. This can pull more fluid into the urine and increase urination.
This may show up as one bathroom trip becoming two, three, or more. The sleep disruption can then leave you tired the next day. The CDC lists frequent urination among common diabetes symptoms, along with increased thirst, hunger, fatigue, blurry vision, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
Occasional nighttime urination can happen after drinking a lot before bed. But if it becomes a pattern, especially with strong thirst or morning fatigue, it should be checked.
2. Waking Up Very Thirsty
High blood sugar can make you feel unusually thirsty because the body loses extra fluid through urination. Some people wake up with a dry mouth, sticky feeling in the throat, or a strong need to drink water.
Mayo Clinic describes greater thirst and more urination as important diabetes symptoms. Extra glucose builds up in the blood, and when the kidneys cannot keep up, glucose goes into the urine and pulls fluid from the body.
Thirst alone does not prove high blood sugar. A salty dinner, dry air, mouth breathing, alcohol, or some medications can also cause dry mouth. But thirst that keeps returning at night deserves attention.
