Why So Many People Were Prescribed Statins in the First Place
Statins are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the world. They work by reducing LDL cholesterol, often called bad cholesterol, which plays a role in plaque buildup inside arteries.
For years, doctors relied on cardiovascular risk calculators developed from large population studies. These tools estimate the likelihood of having a heart related event over the next ten years based on factors like age, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking status, and diabetes.
The intention was responsible prevention. If someone’s calculated risk crossed a certain threshold, guidelines often recommended statin therapy.
But here is where it gets interesting.
Some recent analyses suggest that certain older risk models may have overpredicted risk in modern populations. In other words, some people classified as high risk might actually fall into a lower category today.
And that is where the discussion about the possible forty percent begins.
